In three months, Tunisia has imported 534 GWh of electricity

Tunisia has always enjoyed self-sufficiency in electricity.
Of course, the hydrocarbons used in the production of this electricity were (largely) imported, but the electrons that flowed through the lines were always powered by local power plants.

In recent years, however, this has not been the case. Not only does our country now import "ready" electricity from Algeria, but we also no longer export to Libya. And the rate of growth of Tunisian imports has continued to grow.

In the first three months of 2022, for example, Tunisia imported 534 GWh of electricity from Algeria. This figure, which was achieved in the space of three months, is already half of what was achieved in the entire year 2021. It should also be noted that the first quarter is far from being a peak period for electricity consumption.

This is what we learn from the monthly report of the Ministry of Energy.

Even more worrying is the decline in national electricity production, whose total volume fell from 4662 to 4309 GWh, marking a decrease of 8%. Most of this drop in production is explained by the considerable drop in the production of the Carthage Power Company, the only private producer of fossil electricity in the country.

Indeed, the electricity generated by CPC in the first quarter of 2022 was only 329 GWh, a 60% drop from the 824 GWh announced a year earlier.
